Boston Fire Commission is established.

[1872] The five-member board is charged with managing the Boston Fire Department. Alfred Rockwell is the first chairman. Seeing the establishment of the board as a diminution of his authority, Fire Chief John Damrell resigns in protest. The board is replaced by a single commissioner in 1895.*
